Mays Hill Master Plan FAQs

Who manages the Mays Hill Precinct land as part of Parramatta Park?

The Precinct is part of Parramatta Park and is managed by the Parramatta Park Trust.

Why is a Master Plan being prepared for the Mays Hill Precinct?

Three-quarters of the Precinct was used as a golf course from 1957 to 2015, which limited public access to and use of this area. The remainder of the Precinct is grassed areas used as sporting fields by local schools and sporting groups. The Precinct has limited pedestrian routes and no formal recreational facilities or amenities such as picnic areas, playgrounds or toilets.

The closure of the golf course in 2015 created the opportunity to provide a diverse range of recreation and leisure activities to complement the wider Parramatta Park.

The Parramatta Park Trust have finalised the Master Plan for the Precinct, which can be viewed or downloaded below.

Where will the new City of Parramatta aquatic facility be located within the Mays Hill Precinct?

In June 2016, the NSW Government announced the Mays Hill Precinct as the preferred location for a new aquatic facility to replace the Parramatta War Memorial Swimming Centre and has since committed $30 million to the project. The Parramatta War Memorial Swimming Centre closed at the end of March 2017 to facilitate the construction of the Government’s new Western Sydney Stadium.

The City of Parramatta Council conducted an assessment in late 2016 that identified two potential site options within the Mays Hill Precinct – one has now been chosen.

During February and March 2017, we asked the community to tell us which location they preferred. After considering community views, and conducting further site investigations, we can confirm that the preferred site is the corner of Park Parade and Pitt Street (north of Jubilee Avenue Walkway).

This site is indicated on the Master Plan which can be viewed or downloaded below.

The City of Parramatta Council has undertaken detailed planning and community consultation for the new aquatic facility. The Council and Park Trust have been working together to ensure the best outcome for the Precinct and future community users.

What is the process for planning the new aquatic facility and how can I get involved?

The City of Parramatta Council will be continuing to include the community consultation in their design process for the new aquatic facility.

To contact Council and register to receive updates on planning for a new facility, please email [email protected] or phone 1300 617 058.

What will the future Mays Hill Precinct look like?

The community told us that the Precinct should provide for a diverse range of recreation and leisure facilities and activities, retain and enhance the natural landscape qualities of the Precinct, improve cycling and walking paths, and create a space that is safe and accessible for all.

During development of the Master Plan, consideration was given to the unique natural and heritage characteristics of the Precinct, and opportunities to provide for an increased diversity of recreation and leisure facilities and activities.

Our architect and consultant team has now designed the Master Plan for the Mays Hill Precinct, which can be viewed or downloaded below.

Will the amount of open space in Parramatta Park be reduced?

No. Mays Hill Precinct was previously used as a golf course so it was largely closed off to the wider community. This space will be transformed to allow it to be used by everybody. This is important because the Parramatta residential and working population is expected to increase substantially over the coming years, putting pressure on existing recreation facilities and open spaces. Mays Hill Precinct is well located to cater to existing and new communities.

The Parramatta Park Trust will ensure that there is no overall loss of public open space in Parramatta Park as a result of the new Western Sydney Stadium and the pool relocation.

What will happen to the memorial walk and plaque for Mrs Prabha Kumar?

The walk and plaque that was erected in Mrs Prabha Kumar’s memory will be incorporated into the Master Plan to ensure that it remains protected for the future.

When will the Master Plan be completed and implemented?

The Master Plan has now been completed and can be viewed or downloaded below. Parramatta Park Trust will work with the City of Parramatta to progress the design of the aquatic centre and the broader precinct.

Will the Master Plan for the Precinct be delivered all at once?

Works will be delivered as funding becomes available from the NSW Government in line with priorities determined by the Master Plan process.

How can I get involved?
